大马约有1500家塑料生产和加工公司,中小型企业更是国内塑料加工行业的主SCGM(SCGM,7247,主板工业产品股)执行主席兼董事经理拿督斯里李福成早在1984年,就看到了这个发展趋势,所以大胆放下原有事业,转行投入塑料事业。这也造就了SCGM旗下子公司,李顺成塑胶工业成为大马塑料行业的领导者,且连续10年获得《南洋商报》主办的“金牛奖”荣誉,以及连续两年获得“金鹰奖”。

李顺成塑胶工业已经营了30年,在这30年间,公司营业额年年增长,而且几乎每年都获得显著增长率。李顺成塑胶工业在2008年,以SCGM之名上市后,其营业额也突破了1亿令吉。
2008年,SCGM首次公开募股(IPO),以每股发售价78仙发售1200万股,相等于15%已扩大缴足股本。当中,共有150万股是配售给选定的投资者、600万股是供大马公众认购,及450万股是保留给该公司董事与雇员认购。

The company has allocated RM3m-RM4m to acquire machinery to produce dual-coloured plastic packaging in a single production line,a first in the country. Currently, the company's production lines consist of 33 automatic forming machines, 22 hydraulic die-cut machines and 6 extrusion machines.

As the use of plastic packaging for the food and beverages and healthcare industries grows, SCGM expects to become one of the largest suppliers of thermo-vacuum plastic packaging in Asia. According to industry research, the global packaging industry will experience substantial growth with total revenue to hit US$530b next year. This represents an increase of 24% over 2009 with plastic packaging being the largest segment of growth.

The Australian market also looks interesting for this sector. In mid-2012, Australia's Amcor Ltd, the world's largest packaging company, merged with Aperio Group, its Australian competitor, causing price distortions in the plastic packaging market. This has resulted in major F&B players in Australia seeking alternative plastic packaging suppliers with lower prices, This development could benefit SCGM and other players such as Daibochi Plastic and Packaging Industry Bhd and Tomypak Holdings Bhd.

The company has 49 designs registered with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore and 58 designs registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia.

A shrewd businessman with a hands-on approach, Datuk Seri Lee Hock Seng set up SCGM Bhd with his 3 younger brothers in Kulai, Johor in 1984.

His company started producing food packaging in a shophouse with just 2 machines. Over the years, the company expanded to another 2 shophouses before it bought over a new Kulai factory measuring 3.64ha in 1992. Since the, the company has moved on to supplying plastic packages to major food and beverage players in Malaysia and overseas.

SCGM was listed on Bursa Malaysia in 2008 at 78sen. 

The quality of the company's products has enabled it to win the Enterprise 50 Awards; it is the sole company to have won the award for 9 consecutive years from 2001.

Currently, 75% of the company's revenue is derived from the F&B industry while the remaining 25% is split into 15% from the medical and 10% from the electronic sector.


The company also has 5 extrusion lines to produce high-quality raw materials, including sheets and films for food and produce packaging, folding boxes, sealed trays and containers. Being able to manufacture its own raw materials enables the company to have more control over costs.

The product - air-tight disposable food containers - ensure that biscuits or cookies remain crunchy for days. It can also store liquids without any spillage. So far, the company has developed over 10 designs of the products which are made of polyenthylene terephthalate, an environmentally-friendly material.

Lee Soon Seng's managing director, Datuk Seri Lee Hock Seng, said the company had perfected the thermo press-form technology after a one-year trial and error before going for mass production.

"In this technology, the accuracy of moulding is very important to ensure absolute air-tightness. Basically, the containers are tailor-made to suit our clients' needs. "The air-tight property has added value to the products. Although air ventilation is still needed for certain food items such as vegetables and fruits, air-tight containers still have vast uses in the food industry and we foresee a sharp rise in the demand for this new range of products," he told Business Times recently.

SCGM Bhd, the country’s largest manufacturer of thermo-vacuum form plastic packaging, has appointed Sabah-based Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Bhd (KTC) as sole distributor of its Benxon-brand food packaging and plastic cups to food and beverage retailers and manufacturers in Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

Under the MoU, KTC will distribute SCGM’s Benxon-brand products, through its 6,419 distribution points, across 18 distribution centres. This is a huge addition to SCGM’s existing 10 distribution points in these states. 

SCGM corporate affairs manager David Cheng said that these three markets are relatively untapped and the collaboration would enable the group to make inroads into these markets. “Even though we have been in business in Sabah and Sarawak for the past 10 years, but we really couldn’t penetrate the market because we didn’t have the infrastructure. But through this MoU, we can make further inroads to all the shops which we were not be able to enter before,” Cheng said.

Cheng added that apart from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, SCGM, which exports to 30 countries around the world, is aiming to expand to Cambodia and Laos.

Lau noted that SCGM’s products are of the biodegradable type and still not widely recognised in Sabah and Sarawak, but there are signs of consumers beginning to use such products as their awareness over health and the environment grows.

SCGM執行主席李福成接受專訪時表示,以保麗龍為原料的餐具,相當不環保,且無法加熱,因此公司將塑膠餐具的原料改良後,其餐具盒都可以被泥土分解,公司會逐步把所有的產品以可分解的原料生產,利於保護環境。“公司生產的塑膠餐盒甚至可以放進微波爐加熱,給人們帶來更多的便利。”他說,每個保麗龍餐盒的批發價約6仙,公司的塑膠餐盒每個批發價為12仙,雖然貴了一倍。惟部份地方政府,如檳城及馬六甲已經禁止使用保麗龍,相信其他州屬也會陸續跟進,落實禁止使用保麗龍餐盒的措施,因此朔膠餐盒的前景看俏。


李福成也表示,現在人們對食品包裝的要求越來越高,給公司帶來更大的機會。“時勢造就了公司成長的機會。”


生活素質越來越提高,李福成以吉蘭丹及吉打兩地的市場的飲料業為例,當地的業者已經不再使用塑膠袋子,取而代之的是塑膠杯子了。“使用塑膠杯子可以隨處擺放,而袋子不能,過去公司並沒有進入當地的市場,沒想到當地的業績竟然可以取得不錯的表現,這也讓公司感到非常驚喜。”

他自豪的表示,工廠其中一台機器專門生產塑膠杯子,若24小時不停運作,杯子的日產量高達120萬個,在亞洲並沒有多少業者擁有這麼高產量的機器。他補充,基於需求量看俏,公司已經向意大利公司訂購機器,以便提高塑膠杯子的產量。

Cost

The protracted slump in crude oil prices and the weakened ringgit against the USD are proving to be boon for local plastics manufacturers – the former is an essential raw material in the production of polyethylene resin, and the latter provides obvious foreign exchange gains for export oriented players.

SCGM is one company that is expecting a windfall from these two developments. 

It exports up to 47% of its products.Falling crude oil prices have resulted in cheaper product-ion of polyethylene.

SCGM generally use SGD and USD for its dealings. The weakness of the ringgit is good for SCGM as it sees extra benefits in terms of forex gains. Low oil prices resulted in a 30% drop in the price of polyethylene. 詢及大馬的經商環境,李福成認為,大馬是製造業的天堂,因為電費是全亞洲最便宜的國家,即使近期電費回扣減少了,但與周邊國家相比,仍算便宜,且土地成本也不會很高,對製造業而言是相對利好的因素。
“雖然有這些利好因素,但是製造業所需的供應鏈並不完善,是大馬製造業所面對的問題。”

他舉例,如果在中國廣東設廠,廠家可以在周邊地區及時找到相關零件,而大馬就需要訂購,並等候幾天,才可取得相關零件,中間就浪費不少時間了。

Malaysian packaging maker Lee Soon Seng Plastics Industries Sdn Bhd is investing nearly $5 million for a new factory in the country, driven both by local markets expanding in Southeast Asia and what it says are global customers looking for alternatives to rising costs in China.

Publicly-listed Lee Soon Seng, which has nine extrusion lines and 40 thermoforming and vacuum forming machines at several factories in Johor, Malaysia, said the narrowing gap between costs in Malaysia and China is helping to drive its investment.

The company plans to open a new 100,000-square-foot factory this year in Johor that will boost its capacity by 15 percent, according to Business Development Manager Tai Chin Lian, during an interview at the company's booth at the Plastics & Rubber Vietnam 2014 show, held March 4-6 in Ho Chi Minh City.

LSS's sales have risen steadily from 61.7 million Malaysian ringgits ($17.1 million) in its fiscal year ending April 30, 2009, to 96.7 million ringgits ($31.6 million) in the year ending April 30, 2013, the company said in its most recent annual report. Profits in that period rose from 5.2 million ringgits in 2009 ($1.44 million) to 7.8 million ringgits ($2.54 million) in 2013, the Johor-based company said.

“Aggressive marketing to broaden customers … also helped in line with higher demand from growing Asian markets despite a challenging external environment,” the company said in the 2013 report. “Successful penetration into the U.S. market also helped to boost revenues significantly,” it said. “The new machines purchased last year helped to expand production capacity but new machineries may be needed to be acquired soon to cope with demand.”

In the interview at the PRV show, Tai said the company will invest 15 million ringgits ($4.9 million) in additional extrusion lines and thermoforming and vacuuming forming capacity for the new factory this year.

He said the company is growing because it focuses on improving packaging design both for functionality and manufacturability, and believes it has advantages by providing a full range for services from design, tooling and manufacturing under one roof.

The company does not plan to add significantly to the 400 employees it has to handle the new capacity, instead relying on more automated equipment, he said. Wages in Malaysia are also rising – the country implemented its first minimum wage policy in 2013, which the government said pushed up wages more than 30 percent for affected workers, to about $300 a month, That included about 20 percent of the manufacturing workforce. But Tai said that the gap with China is shrinking, as over the long-term, Chinese wages have risen much more. A decade ago, average Malaysian factory wages would have been two to three times the Chinese levels, but now they are similar, he said. “The feedback from my customers, for the past 10 years, they all go to China because of the China cost,” Tai said. “Now they realize that the China cost is going up… That's the main reason for the global buyers, they transfer, they ship out from China, they go to a third country. Malaysia is one of the options.”

SCGM, which recently attracted institutional investor interest, is planning to build a new factory worth RM4 million to boost the company’s annual revenue by RM20 million. 

In an interview with theedgemalaysia.com, company Chairman Datuk Lee Hock Seng said the new two-storey factory will house new production equipment for plastics cups. “This project will begin in November 2014 and will contribute more than RM20 million to the company at full capacity,” he said. He added that the company is expected to achieve its revenue target of RM100 million for the FY2014.

Lee said that his company was looking to further its reach into India.SCGM currently owns businesses worldwide in North America, Oceania, Europe and Asia. “We’ll keep on moving worldwide… We’ve already moved into India but we’re going to move further in because India is a very huge country,” he said.

The Johor-based SCGM currently commands 60%-70% market share of the plastic food packaging industry.“I dare to say that about 60%-70% of market share belongs to Lee Soon Seng Plastics Industries (LSSPI) Sdn Bhd” said Lee.

公司执行主席及董事经理拿督斯里李福成接受《南洋商报》专访时表示,以往我国饮食业领域使用的塑料杯都是进口,鲜少有厂家自行生产他说,SCGM今次特地从意大利购买机械,并从德国购买塑料杯的套模,自行生产塑料杯供本国及外国市场。德国生产的钢制套模成本110万令吉,加上意大利进口的机械总共耗资500余万令吉。

“我们不惜成本,从欧洲进口生产塑料杯的全自动化机械。根据该机械的规格,每天可生产多达129万个塑料杯。足可应付本国及外国饮食业的市场需求。”

他表示,位于古来24哩的厂房目前正在扩建,预计今年10月能够投入生产塑料杯,随着塑料杯这个新产品投入生产后,该公司的业绩及利润预计直接推高至少10%。“目前还未正式投入生产,来自国内外的订单已经源源不绝,可见塑料杯的前景一片明朗,市场的需求量相当大。我们将采取一条龙的运作方式,原料自供自给,从而节省更多成本。”

Thermal vacuum forming plastic packaging manufacturer SCGM Bhd is set to enter a new segment by making plastic cups by end-2014.

In a statement Friday, the company said it had allocated RM11.6 million in capital expenditure (capex) for machinery acquisition and construction of a new plant for the venture located at its Johor Bahru plant.

“With our track record for quality and delivery, we have secured orders for more than half of our plastic cup production capacity to date,” said Lee. Lee said, going forward, the company also intends to export to Japan and China,among others.
Lee said SCGM’s new plastic cup production line has the capacity to manufacture 700 cups per minute, equivalent to 1 million cups daily. He said the RM11.6 million capex would be financed by internally generated funds and borrowings.

他透露,公司耗资1160万令吉投入新生产线,虽然目前工程还在进行,但手上已经拿到60%的订单,产品也会出口到澳洲。他说,上述工程将于11月竣工,预料在今年底正式投入运作,放眼明年销售业绩。

李福成表示,公司取得亮眼成绩也有赖于稳定的原料价格供应,而明年实施消费税后,物价究竟会涨多少,目前仍是未知数,但他坚信不会对公司造成太大影响。一些顾客放账限期为90天,一旦落实消费税,公司在未收到钱时,每月必缴纳6%的消费税,而需要大量现金流动周转,影响现金流。

李福成说,今年10月公司会前往日本参与展销博览会,希望透过该项盛会开拓日本市场他指出,日本市场非常注重食品包装条件严格,追求无尘净化(Cleanroom)塑料产品,虽然目前公司还未达到这项标准,但不排除会探讨这方面的技术,先着手开拓普通塑料产品市场。他认为,一旦产品迈出进军日本市场的第一步,就能巩固产品的供应链、经营及行销能力,引领公司迈向新里程碑。
他透露,公司也会制定发展目标顺序计划,全面开拓海外市场,尤其是美国、澳洲及日本市场,建立自有品牌,提升产品附加值。

Lee said while 1Q is traditionally its strongest, the difference in net profit between the four quarters is just RM1 million or RM2 million.

“We expect the group to record stronger 4QFY15 results as our new plastic cup production line comes onstream at our existing plant in Kulaijaya, Johor,” Lee told The Edge Financial Daily in an interview. 

Construction of the new plastic cup production line started in June this year and [it] will be operational in December. As such, its revenue contribution will just be four to five months for FY15,” said Lee. Moving forward to FY16, however, contribution of the new production line to total revenue is expected to be significant, with a target of about RM20 million per year, he said.

Lee said the low capex has helped pull up the group’s profit yields, and while the current capacity utilisation is 90%, there’s still room for expansion at its Kulaijaya plant which spans 3.6ha. He also noted that SCGM was in a net cash position with RM8.5 million in cash and bank balances and borrowings of RM1.9 million as at July 31, this year, allowing the group to undertake future expansion plans. 

Already, SCGM is planning to offer ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) packaging “very soon”, which will potentially be a major contributor to the group’s revenue, said Lee. The group has started off by penetrating the Australian market with the EVOH packaging materials, which are more expensive than other food packaging. “Australia has given us a purchase order for a trial run. Benefit from the EVOH packaging is that the shelf life of the food [is at least twice as long],” said Lee. If this initiative is successful, Lee hopes to bring the premium EVOH packaging to Malaysia where he sees SCGM monopolising the market being the sole producer.

“Locally, it will take some time [to be introduced] because the value is higher. We are now focusing only on the Australian market. I see it (EVOH) starting to contribute to the group’s revenue from FY16. But we won’t know how big [a contribution] it will be [yet] because only certain customers use it,” said Lee. 

SCGM(SCGM,7247,主板工业产品股)今年将推出新产品和进军日本市场,放眼2016财年表现可更上一层楼。SCGM董事经理拿督斯理李福成接受《南洋商报》专访时,提到制造热塑杯新产品的机械,将在本月(January)杪运抵,预计下个月开始运作。他透露,公司已经有新产品的订单,所以新产品应该可从2015财年最后两个月,开始贡献盈利。

目前,供应给食品业的产品,占公司营业额约75%,医疗与其他包装则占约15%,其余为电子相关的包装。

同时,李福成也提及近期有为进军日本市场铺路,看好这个相当依赖塑胶的庞大市场,可进一步带动公司出口。“我们么肯定在2015财年杪就打入日本。全年贡献会在2016财年开始,所以2016财年的业绩会更好。”

3QFY15

Revenue for 3Q15 was up 10.6% to RM27.4 million from RM24.7 million, on the back of higher export sales, which rose 17.2% to RM12.5 million from RM10.7 million previously, while local sales was up 5.6% to RM14.8 million from RM14.1 million a year ago.

SCGM Bhd’s third quarter net profit ended January 31, 2015 (3QFY15) rose 17.4% to RM3.8 million from RM3.3 million a year ago on higher topline and lower input costs.

For the nine months to Jan 31 (9MFY15) group revenue rose 5.6% to RM80.7 million from RM76.5 million previously, while net profit grew by 15.7% to RM10.4 million from RM9.0 million a year ago, due to lower raw material prices.

The group has also commissioned its new plastic cup manufacturing plant at its existing premises in Kulai, Johor, in March. It had invested RM11.6 million in the plant for new machinery and construction.

Group executive chairman and managing director Datuk Lee Hock Seng says the Johor-based company invested RM12mil for the new operations, which involved the construction of a 60,000 sq ft building and a new single production machinery from Italy. The new building is located at the company’s nine-acre site. The facility started operations in June.

“The single production line can produce up to 1.2 million cups per day or an average of about 300 million cups a year. “We have started shipping out orders last month for the domestic and international markets,” Lee tells StarBizWeek in a telephone interview.

Lee is determined to push the bulk of the production to Australia, Singapore, Pakistan, Indonesia and Myanmar, apart from its existing markets in Portugal, New Zealand and the Middle-East. For the domestic market, Lee says the products are mainly for plastic wholesalers and hawkers.

The new product is expected to contribute between RM10mil and RM12mil in revenue for FY16 with full utilisation rate,” says Lee, adding that the production line is running at a utilisation rate of 50% now. 

While there are many small players in the industry, the low-profile Lee is confident that the company stands to gain with the new high-tech machine. He points out that the company has different pricing strategies for clients and this boils down to the number of orders at the end of the day.

Aside from being the leading producer of thermo-vacuum formed plastic packaging like disposable plastic trays and containers, SCGM also produces airtight and watertight containers for the developed markets like Australia, the United States and Singapore.

For Malaysia, its market share is about 70%, while the export market stands at 46%. Lee says developed markets are now looking for lower-cost quality options to meet their packaging needs and this has been the emerging trend. So, coupled with SCGM’s aggressive marketing team, the company has seen new customers in its portfolio, Lee points out.

Being small cap company in the local stock exchange, SCGM has a dominant position in the industry, hands-on management team, above-average return of equity with little leverage and solid growth potential. Going forward, Lee is optimistic that sales turnover for the new financial year will be improved, as it continuously source for new customers to sustain growth.

他说,海外市场销售在2011年至2015年间,从2960万令吉,增长至4920万令吉。在2015財政年(截至4月30日止),该公司海外市场营业额按年增长13.6%,佔总营业额的46%。

2QFY16 (August2015-October2015)

SCGM Bhd ( Valuation: 1.70, Fundamental: 2.60) posted a net profit of RM4.79 million in the second quarter ended Oct 31,2015 (2QFY16), an increase of 57.57% from RM3.04 million a year ago, helped by favourable product mix, lower fuel cost and strengthening of US dollar against ringgit.

According to a statement today, based on the enlarged share base of 132 million after the one-for-two bonus issue and 10% private placement, the earnings per share (EPS) rose to 3.6 sen, from 2.3 sen.

Revenue rose 30.63% to RM34.12 million, from RM26.12 million, as the sale of new products, plastic trays and plastic cups contributed to sales performance.

In a filing with Bursa today, the company said the profit before tax for the quarter was very commendable due to input cost, such as fuel cost, the impact of which on margins had trended downwards.

For the six months period (1HFY16), SCGM’s net profit grew 47.11% to RM9.68 million, from RM6.58 million. EPS rose to 7.3 sen, from 5 sen in 1HFY15, based on an enlarged share base of 132 million.

Revenue for 1HFY16 rose 19.4% to RM63.76 million, from RM53.4 million.

In a statement today, SCGM said it intends to invest RM15 million over two years to increase its production capacity by 34% to 22.5 million kilogrammes per year, from 16.8 million kg per year presently(the production capacity will increased from 1.4mil kg to 1.878mil kg per month, an increment of 34% per month).  SCGM said the investment for the new machinery would be funded by a portion of proceeds from the recently-completed private placement, which has raised gross proceeds of RM31.3 million. The new machinery, comprising auto punching, press forming, extrusion and computer numerical control equipment, would be commissioned in stages. Upon completion, the enlarged capacity would begin contributing to group revenue in the financial year ending April 30, 2018(FY18).

他补充,该公司產能会因此增加约10%至20%。

李福成也表示,公司每個月的產能約2千噸左右,未來仍有擴建廠房的計劃。
“公司早前籌備了3千132萬令吉,物色3英畝的地庫,以擴建廠房,惟需求不斷成長,因此決定將3英畝的地庫要求提高至10英畝,公司已經物色了3個地方,只要價格合理,公司會馬上購入相關地庫。”

詢及與金德昌(KTC,0180,創業板貿服組)合作事宜時,李福成表示,雙方是在一場投資講座會認識,經過洽談以後,便決定透過對方公司將旗下的產品伸展至東馬市場。
“雙方認識僅僅只有4天,便決定合作了。”
“這麼短的時間內,雙方就敲定了合作關係,主要是雙方對企業的經營之道,都有共同的理念,所以雙方可以一拍即合。”
他笑言,雙方敲定了合作關係,就像“一見鍾情”。
金德昌控股是東馬知名代理分銷商,在東馬擁有6千419家分銷商。
他表示,當時為了與金德昌控股管理層會面,親自飛往東馬。
“當時臨近聖誕假日,柔佛每天3班飛機的機票已經售罄了,我們只好乘搭巴士到吉隆坡第二國際機場,飛往東馬。”
“公司在東馬本來有8個代理商,在貿易程序上面對一定繁雜,但現在只需面對金德昌控股一家代理商,且對方擁有6千個以上的分銷點,因此公司看到成長的潛能,預期東馬市場可從3%的營業額提高至15%。”
李福成補充,為了協助金德昌控股,公司會在沙巴及砂拉越各派駐了一位技術專員,擔任市場營銷角色,以便講解產品的的成份與特性。
“只有讓客戶瞭解了產品的成份,才能讓他們放心使用公司產品。”
李福成信心滿滿的表示,如果在砂拉越看到採用塑膠盒子包裝的糕點,相信該塑膠盒是Benxon的品牌。
SCGM公司註冊的商標包括Benxon、Temp Scan、Temp Scan Cover及PLA,生產的塑料餐具多達6千種,其中包括了杯子蛋糕(Cup Cake)模具。
李福成說,西方人相當喜愛杯子蛋糕,菲律賓也相當愛吃,相較之下,大馬的杯子蛋糕市場並沒有海外市場來得大,但現在已經看到了杯子蛋糕已經有成長的趨勢,進而提振相關業務。

3QFY16 (November2015-January2016)

受餐飲包裝業務銷售增長帶動,SCGM公司(SCGM,7247,主板工業產品組)截至2016年1月31日止第三季,淨利增長83.29%至700零5萬3千令吉;首9個月淨利也上升60.42%至1千673萬2千令吉。該公司第三季營業額則增長36.18%至3千726萬3千令吉,首九個月營業額則增加25.08%至1億零101萬8千令吉。

SCGM公司董事經理拿督斯里李福財透過文告說,該公司餐飲業務增長強勁主要受生產種類的增加及公司積極拓展本地及海外市場所推動。

此外,他說,為了增加出口業務,公司預計在本財年第四季擴充產能,並有信心將能在2017財政年開始貢獻正面盈利於公司李福財也表示,公司目前投資了1千130萬令吉用於添置新機器,並預計將能增加產能48%至每年2千500萬公斤。

李福成指,根据大马对外贸易促进机构(MATRADE)在2013年的资料,塑料和橡胶是国家主要出口产品。根据该机构数据库,大马约有7000家包装、塑料和化工产品注册公司。

“我可以在竞争市场上生存,屹立市场30年,并稳占大马塑料领域领导人地位,秘诀是用心经营。”


李福成在从事塑料业前是一名汽水代理商。此前,他是迷你市场经营者。当他成功把原本只有半间店的迷你市场,拓展至一家店面时,就交给弟妹打理,转型成为汽水代理商在成为汽水代理商的数年间,他从原有拥有1架货车,成功发展到成4架罗里在经营业务。在事业最高峰时,他发现汽水业有所限制,难以发展扩大,于是便带着弟弟,转投塑料业。“当时,我们整个家族都在做同一个行业,这很危险,所以我与其中一个弟弟转做塑料业。每次都是在事业最成功时,我就选择转型。”

李福成进军塑料业非贸然决定,他在1980年时,就开始到新加坡参加展览会。
在那个年代,出国看展览的企业家可说少之又少,但他相信只有通过观展,才能发掘市场未来的趋势。当年观展的收获,包括了看到包装行业发展趋势。经过一番考量后,他决定投入这个行业。
若不是李福成当年用心的考察和考量,也不会有今日的李顺成塑胶工业。
“在考察新业务时要很专心、很用心的走进去该领域,不是看到哪一个好就走进哪一个领域,我们已考量过了,这个行业是可行的。”当时,为了加强竞争优势,李福成毅然向银行贷款10万令吉,用作发展资金,包括购买机器等。通过银行贷款,他也成功把劣势转换成优势。问及公司名称,李福成表示,“李顺成塑胶工业”并非是父亲名字,而是来自李福成父亲的杂货店名称,寓意生意顺利又成功。李福成坦言,要真正地“生意顺利又成功”,必须要有自己的竞争优势,就是产品要比别人特别,同时也要比别人快。不过,因为他的起步比人快,因此今天才有这番成就。

从1986年至今,大马共批准了5万1541个产品专利权。2014年截至首5个月,共有3020份专利权申请,当中1150个已获得当局批准通过。许多传统企业对于专利权一窍不通,也不懂得运用专利权来保护自己所研发的产品。不过,李福成清楚了解专利权的重要性,也为注册了数百个产品专利权。这一举措,无疑是为了保护自身的企业。他说:“当有一天,我发现你在模仿我的产品时,我会告诉你,‘stop your production,this is my royalty’。如果你马上停止生产,我也就算了,如果你继续生产,我将会出律师信,这样也是为了保护我自己的产品。”李福成不但只为产品申请专利权,在20年前,就开始注册与产品有关的域名。当初前卫的想法,如今也证明了他比人先行一步,在市场上抢了头势。不但如此,在一次的机缘巧合下,他刚好与一班年轻人聊天,聊起电脑科技的发展趋势,引发李福成在90年代,大胆地投资了20万令吉,在公司安装了产品追踪和会计系统。
“当时,20万令吉是一个很大的数目,但是这个系统可让我从订购单一直追踪产品到送货,再到客户的手上。后来也证明了,当时的远见是正确的。”

为了激励员工的气势,李福成提供奖掖予员工,主要是市场部为主。市场部员工都有目标,一旦达到既定目标时,都会获得奖励金,他甚至骄傲地表示,在20年前曾发5位数花红给员工,因此员工非常爱惜这个饭碗。“就好像新加坡公务员,你给他50块,他们不会要,因为他们怕丢掉工作,所以在我这里工作了20年的员工超过10个。我对员工很严厉,你在我的工厂找不到烟蒂,因为被我捉到,员工就要罚款500令吉。“员工要抽烟一定要在保安室外,不可以带进公司。我的员工是尊重我,不是怕我,我也不会命令员工做事。”

随着时代的进步,很多人都认为塑料是夕阳行业,但是李福成认为,夕阳行业是在于心态,以及怎么去看这个行业。他认为,只有创新产品,才能在这个竞争激烈的行业中,占到一席地位。
“在20年前,当时还没出omega鸡蛋时,我一位做农场的朋友说农场是夕阳行业。
“我当时怒斥他,这是完全是出自你的脑袋,你的心是夕阳西下,那么你的行业就是夕阳行业。”
他续称:“我告诉他,所有农场都是生产鸡蛋,所以必须比别人特别,例如生产甘榜鸡蛋,因为甘榜鸡蛋比一般鸡蛋贵,利润也比较高。”


李福成说,大马许多华裔中小型企业不懂得善用政府的拨款。他在1980年起,就向政府申请投资补贴,且成功获得补贴达15年。“不过,现已无申请机会。许多中小企业到今天,都不懂得善用政府的资金。”投资补贴是给予已在运作至少12个月的制造公司,所谓扩大生产能力、现代化和提升生产设施的资本补贴。另外,政府每年都有提供创新资助(innovation grant)供中小型企业申请。曾经有一年,李顺成塑胶工业取得了政府发出约100万令吉的补贴。公司不但用该笔资金购买了一台价值100万令吉的机器,也继续向政府申请额外补贴,政府后来也批准了80万令吉的资助。

不过,在获得资助后,公司必须贮备报告,分析新和旧机器的速度等。“在华人社会里,有多少华裔企业会向政府申请资助?很多甚至不敢去听政府办的讲座。我则每次都会出席讲座,从中获得最新的资讯。”



在粤语中就有这么一句俚语“苏州过后无艇搭”。世界格局为企业所营造的气势是非常短暂,只有捉准了这个气势,才能在短时间内制造盈利。李福成坦言,在商场,机会一旦过去就永远不会回来了。
例如,在非典型肺炎(SARS)和流感爆发时期,李顺成塑胶工业成功将危机转为机会,为公司赚了一大笔盈利。“2004年的SARS,新加坡有两位医生不幸去世。那时侯,没有多少位塑料行业的人会通过危机行销,我是第一个。”他续称:“在不到两个月的时间,我生产了一个耳盖,赚了一笔。而两年前的H1N1也让我捉准机会,流感在新加坡的2个星期内,公司赚了百多万。”
唯有创新产品,才能引领市场的趋势,李顺成塑胶工业在同业竞争中,成本比其他人更低;在产品的品质上,也比其他人更优质,这就是他们的优势,李福成比喻说:“公司是一辆开在大道上的车,必须一直加油才能不让后面的车超越。一旦停顿了,肯定就会被超越了。”

消息人士向《南洋商报》透露,日本公司看中SCGM(SCGM,7247,主板工业产品股),欲出高价全购后者股权并除牌下市。

“SCGM在7月初曾接待过一家日本公司的数位董事,前来大马视察该公司与厂房运作。”SCGM在过去数个月的股价走势也相当强劲,6月至今涨幅接近50%。知悉上述事项的消息人士表示,这不是SCGM首次被日本公司相中,此前也被一家同样来自相关领域的日本公司接洽过。

鉴于仍处于可行性研究阶段,消息人士拒绝披露该日本公司的名字,仅指是来自相关领域,即塑料包装。
据悉,从事塑料包装的日本著名公司,主要有日本积水(SEKISUI)、Ginpo Pack和日本东洋制罐株式会社(Toyo Seikan)。“日本公司到海外寻求投资或收购目标,已经不是新鲜事,他们主要把生产业务从国内移至海外。”

针对上述消息,本报联络上SCGM执行主席兼董事经理拿督斯里李福成时,他表示拒绝对消息传闻作出回应。“但如果有人肯出高价,作为股东之一,我也会考虑(卖出股权)。再说,我都已经60多岁了,就算退下来去享受人生也无不可。” 询及该心目中的高价为何,他表示,至少要等于公司目前股价或估值的倍数。

SCGM reported a strong 9M14 net profit of RM9.0m (+47.5% YoY) which beat our full-year net profit target of RM8.3m. The strong results were mainly driven by: 

(i) stronger operational margin as a result of stable commodity prices and higher product sale price, 
(ii) consistent product efficiency, 
(iii) capital gains of RM0.545m from land disposals, and 
(iv) write-back of a provision of doubtful debt of RM0.33m. 

Stripping off these one-off items, the 9M14 core net profit still recorded a tremendous growth of +36.1% YoY to RM8.3m.

The Group is eyeing to introduce a new product, the thermoplastic cup (PPC), this year. Although it is still in the early stages, the Group anticipates that this new product would increase their total production volume by c.10% with an estimated total capex of RM8.0m. The new product line is expected to be completed in 2HCY14 and will be sold both in the local and overseas market. SCGM revealed that production line for this product has zero waste technology, which would greatly reduce cost as well as maximizing production volume from economies of scale. This would definitely boost the firm’s earnings which is based on volume game.

李福成指出,随着公司和盈利规模扩大,要去的倍数的增长已非易事,但他有信心公司每年可成长10%-20%。“在这个领域,每年成长10%-20%已相当不错,并不是每个业者都能做到。经常有人问,SCGM表现超越同行的原因。其实,这算是商业机密,我只能说,管理层采取的措施凑效,而且我们拥有最好的产品技术和机器,这是我们的优势。“

除了维持赚幅,以及采用高技术和机器,2015财政年另人期待的,还包括将在今年11月投产的新机器。李氏说,该产品是热塑杯(thermoplastic cup),预计在今年秒推出。新产品将为2015财政年作出5个月的贡献,要在2016财政年才能做出全面的贡献。当询及新产品将对2015财政年营业额和净利作出多大的贡献,他说,保守估计是10%。不过,一旦新产品的使用率达到100%,可谓公司做出遇2000万的贡献。

SCGM BHD执行董事主席拿督斯里李福成接受《南洋商报》电访时披露,该公司早在10年前就已提供员工培训,主要是现今的资讯一直不断的更新,所以员工也必须与时并进,才能跟上时代的脚步。他说,若遇上经济不景气,该公司不会优先取消员工的培训,反之会继续提供员工培训。“我们甚至还专设一个负责员工培训的部门,去处理员工培训的问题。”

他坦言,在一些旧有的传统企业思维中,业者都会这么认为,若提供员工培训,而员工学有所成后便离职,无形会对企业造成很大的损失,所以都会选择不提供员工培训,或去上课学习新知识。
“但我认为,员工学有所成后离开,反而是我的光荣,因为该员工到其他公司工作表现优异,别人也会称赞我的公司培训出这么优异的员工。”此外,他披露,若公司有提供员工培训,一方面公司每年也能向政府申请索回7万令吉至8万令吉的人力资源培训费。

根據2015年年報,李福成年屆65歲,曾有人建議他退休或放緩企業腳步,他說,企業經營之道無法停下,必須不斷向前,才能持續的生存,因為對手可能會不知不覺超越你。
“就像你在高速大道行駛一樣,即使高速行駛,你無法得知是否會被後面的汽車超越你。”

李福成表示,如果公司放慢了腳步,一旦客戶要求更高的需求時,公司的產能無法應對,那客戶很自然會轉換廠商,屆時公司就會流失客戶了。

“一些年逾90歲的企業家,如郭鶴年及丹斯里鄭鴻標,仍在工作,我為何要退休呢?”他笑言,除非不能走動了,不然會一直持續的工作。

他也強調,過去不等於未來,只有不停向前走,讓公司比別人多一點優勢,才能保持競爭力他說,企業經營之道亦如此,只有默默耕耘及不斷改進,方能保持競爭力。

詢及創業的過程,李福成回憶當年說,當年在雜貨店做店員的時候,老闆吩咐任何事情,都沒有任何的怨言,竭盡所能的完成每個事項,從早上7時做到晚上10時,且一週7天都在工作。
“雖然很辛苦,不過,讓我在一年內學全了老闆的功夫,所以之後我就出來開店,從小雜貨店起家,且取得不錯的成績。”
後來李福成將雜貨店的生意放手給了妹妹經營,自己則從事汽水批發,並成為了古來區的總代理,後來他認為,不應該將雞蛋都擺放在一個籃子里,因此決定和弟弟另辟蹊徑,走上了塑膠製造業的創業路途。
“當時,我們向銀行貸款了約9萬令吉,經常都要面對銀行的電話,`提醒’公司的存款不足,需要馬上到銀行進行轉賬,當中的壓力與辛苦,不言而喻。”
他說,憑藉努力及刻苦耐勞的精神,逐漸將廠房營運達到一定的規模,從而取得了客戶的信任。
“這當中的過程,真的是一步一腳印的走了過來。”

家族企業經常都會面對成員不合的問題,但李福成四兄弟並沒有這個問題,許多人也為此向李福成討教。
家家有本難念的經,李福成說,每個家庭都有不同的背景及觀點,但家族成員的合作,必須保有共同的想法,大家擁有共同點時,自然就可以融洽合作了。身為領導者,也千萬不要抱有著特權的想法,必須同甘共苦,這樣方能服眾。
“掐麵粉時,大家都可以一起動手,但是蛋糕在烘烤中時,逐漸成形之際,大家就開始盤算,自己可以分得哪一塊了。”
李福成補充,領導層也不可以擁有太多的特權,同共甘苦,才能取得服眾。
李福成也表示,將公司在馬股上市,除了籌集資金以外,也可以明確把兄弟之間的股權劃分清楚,把權益釐清以後,也有助於以後的業務發展,猜忌也自然不再了。
“當業務透明化以後,那麼大家利益也就清楚了。”
李福成說,家族的力量有限,上市另一目地,也可以引進外邊優秀的人才協助公司發展。
有關第二代接班人的問題,他說,胥視他們的能力而定,若第二代有意接手的話,最好先到外面打工,因為經過別家企業的磨練以後,多少也會比較不一樣。

李福成告诉《星报》,有意趁中国引发食物安全忧虑之际,推销其食品包装产品。他也指出,食品包装容器产品出口至中国的数量,在近年内稳定增长,主要受惠于中国食物安全疑虑不断。“大多中国加工食品公司,对在中国生产的包装容器安全标准很关注。”

李福成补充,食物安全课题不断,让许多中国饮食品生产商选择从其他国家(包括大马)进口食品包装容器产品。同时,原本使用中国制造相关产品的本地生产商,也因为相同理由,转用本地或中国以外生产的包装容器。


“这将让拥有广泛食品塑料包装产品的公司受惠。我们向来以产品的安全使用为第一位。” 另一方面,李福成也透露,计划出口聚乳酸(PLA)制产品至美国和欧洲市场。“聚乳酸制的食品包装容器与一般塑料制不同,前者只需要6个月就可以完全分解。”

Malaysian packaging maker Lee Soon Seng Plastics Industries Sdn Bhd is investing nearly $5 million for a new factory in the country, driven both by local markets expanding in Southeast Asia and what it says are global customers looking for alternatives to rising costs in China.

Publicly-listed Lee Soon Seng, which has nine extrusion lines and 40 thermoforming and vacuum forming machines at several factories in Johor, Malaysia, said the narrowing gap between costs in Malaysia and China is helping to drive its investment.

SCGM执行主席兼董事经理拿督斯里李福成在股东大会后,对媒体表示,旗下46%的塑料产品均供出口,放眼未来两年可超过50%。
他说,公司的海外市场包括新加坡、澳洲、纽西兰、印尼、缅甸。其中,新加坡是最大的出口市场,占公司出口市场近一半份额。
李福成续称,接下来将进军日本市场,目前正在洽谈中


詢及泛太平洋伙伴關係協議(TPPA)時,他認為,該協議一旦落實,對公司的業務有更大的幫助,因為該協議首要條件就是必須保護環境,且免除稅務以後,更有利於出口至多個國家。”

他補充,公司目前46%的營業額來自出口,過半的產品出口至新加坡,餘下則來自其他海外國家的貢獻,出口貨幣主要以新元及美元為主。

他也說,食品業者都不斷推陳出新,積極推出新產品,像霸市推出自身品牌的熟食及沙拉,都會用到塑膠包裝。不過,這些霸市和公司並沒有直接的關係,大部份是透過代理商處理霸市的需求。
他補充,透過代理商,可以讓客戶取得更好的服務,公司只需專注生產與製造。
“刀無兩邊利,只有劍才有兩邊利,但兩者各有不同的功用,凡事必須專注才能做得更好。”這句話李福成母親給他最大的影響。李福成說,如果心裡有很多雜念,很難把事情做好,即使機會在身旁,也可能會錯過,因此,必須讓自己比別人具備更好的條件。

今年4月24日,SCGM向大马交易所呈报,大股东李福成,拿督斯里李福财,拿督斯里李福源和李福明,通过SCGM李氏私人有限公司于4月21日,以每股rm1.25令吉或总额312万5000令吉,脱售SCGM的250万股股票或3.13%股权。

不过,李福成拒绝透露有关机构投资者的身份,只表示对方是本地机构投资者。

“机构投资者有意增持的股票,不过,由于目前的股价稍微波动,所以我暂时还未决定进一步释放股权。

关于有报道称,若买方的献议价格合理,李福成愿意出售公司,他并不佛忍,并称“如果对方的出价合心意,何乐而不为呢!毕竟我已经拼了30年,也已年过60了。

虽然李福成不排除退下,但他也不会拒绝并购装大公司的机会。

由柔佛州李氏家族掌控的SCGM LEE私人公司,今年6月以每股1.70令吉,脱售SCGM的400万股,予机构共投资者。SCGM LEE私人公司4月也曾脱售股票给机构投资者,以每股1.25令吉,脱售250万股。

《星报》引述不具名消息,称李氏家族经过脱售两批股权给机构投资者后,近期逆转增持股权,应该是要继续持有公司大部分股权。

Share price


Institutional investors have bought into SCGM and caused the recent surges of SCGM Bhd share prices on the 21st of April, said an analyst with a local bank-backed stock broking firm.

The stock saw a 19% jump from its closing price of on Friday RM1.22 to a high of RM1.45 on Monday and gave up some gains to settle at RM1.43. The volume trades for this week hit a record high of 12.93 million shares traded.


“As far as I know its institutional interest that has moved the stock,” said the analyst

“The stock only has a market cap of 80 million shares, in order for large quantities of shares to be purchased; the share base had to be freed up.”

An announcement on Bursa Malaysia yesterday saw a disposal of 10 million shares worth RM1.25 per share by its directors on 21st April 2014.

The identity of the institutional investor was not made known.
